Beaufort, South Carolina may not be a town that is frequently considered or thought about, but Beaufort is surprisingly rich in history. This charming, quaint little southern town is known especially for its film location for some of the world’s most iconic and well-known movies and shows.

One of the most famous movies of all time, starring Tom Hanks and Gary Sinise, was 1994’s, Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump, filmed in the heart of Beaufort, is just one of many iconic movies filmed in the area.

Some other well-known movies filmed in the area are popular ones like The Great Santini (1979), starring Robert Duvall and Blythe Danner. Another one, The Big Chill (1983), stars Tom Berenger and Glenn Close. Talk about big names on the big screen!

Other notable films that took place in this little southern South Carolina town include The Prince of Tides, Daughters of the Dust, A Perfect Word, The War, Chasers, Something to Talk About, 1994’s The Jungle Book, White Squall, Last Dance, Gone Fishin’, G.I. Jane (featuring Demi Moore), Animals, Rules of Engagement, Forces of Nature, and Legend of Bagger Vance.

Wow! The titles aren’t the only exciting part of these movies, of course, because with movies comes A-list actors to this charming town. Familiar faces like Sharon Stone, Robert Duvall, music star Willie Nelson, Jeff Bridges, Danny Glover, Will Smith, and so many others have scouted this town during filming, frequenting the town’s fun local hangouts. How cool is that?!

Apparently, even some locations surrounding Beaufort relate to the iconic movies in different ways. Forrest Gump, for example, inspired The Gump Medical Center that sits in the heart of town. In the movie, the hospital is funded by the money that Forrest Gump makes on his cross-country run.

For fans of The Great Santini, the National Cemetery is a frequented visitor location for fans, so add it to your bucket list.

The bridge in Forrest Gump that Tom Hanks ran across was not actually the Mississippi River (sorry!) but a bridge there in the town of Beaufort.

If there was ever a reason to travel and explore a charming little South Carolina town like Beaufort, this is it. Take some photos, explore the sights, and of course . . . rent some movies! If you’re looking to stay in this historic movie town, The Cuthbert House Inn is an early 1800s mansion right in the heart of Beaufort that offers luxurious bed and breakfast accommodations.
